Description of rain.

Mazhai

Mazhai eenimai yura peigindradhu
Mazhai padugindradhu
adhu pala kodi thanthi khal oodaiya yeesai karoovi
Vanaithil eerindhu amudha vaira kolgal vizhugindrana.

Rain pours pleasantly
Rain sings
It is a musical instrument having several crores of strings
Rain falls from the sky like diamond strips soaked in nectar.

To love all..

Annbhu seidhal

Inndha puvidhanil vazhum marangalum
inbha narumalar poonchedi kootamum
anndha marangalai soozhinda kodigalum
auvthadha mooligai poondupul yavaiyum
yendha thozhil seidhu vazhvanavo?

The trees that live in this earth
The groves of pleasing fragrant flowering plants
The creepers entwining those trees
The medicinal herbs,tubers and grass
That live and abound around us, generously
What do they seek to profess?

Who is a high born person?

Melkulathavar yavar?

Vaiyagam kaippaver ennum---siru vazhai phazhak kadai vai ipper aayenum- poiyagala thozhil seidhe- pirrar
poirrida vazhbavar yenghanamum 'mellor'! [prn. male oar]

Whether one is the ruler and protector of the entire world
Or is a petty shop owner ,selling plantains
If he pursues his profession sincerely, shunning dishonest practises
Thereby receiving the praise and best wishes of all
He will always be considered to be a 'high born'.

Woman's freedom.

Subhramaniya Bharathiyar [1882-1921] is a well known Tamil poet.He is famous for stoking patriotic spirit during the British rule , by his stirring poems that mirrored the anger of the people belonging to an ancient civilisation, against the repression by alien rulers. He is also considered as a National poet of India along with Rabindranath Tagore and few others.

He has also written poems on various other topics . I have attempted to translate a few of those that have caught my fancy.

The first one being on, Woman's freedom.

Penniku vidhuthalai yendru ingu vor needhi pirapitthen :

adharikku ooria perri khellir.

I have proclaimed a law regarding Woman's freedom,

Lend your ears to what I have decreed.

Mannukhul yev ooirum deivamendral ,

mannaiyallum deivam andro?madhi ketteere'!

If every life in this world is but a reflection of god

Isn't your wife also one such reflection? Fools!

Vinnukku parapadupol kadhaigal solveer,

vidhuthalai yenbheer karunai vellam yenbhir,

You spin exotic tales ,dreaming of space travels,

agitate for freedom and wax eloquently on love and kindness

Pennikku vidhuthalai neer illai yenral

pinn indha ulaghinile vazhikkai illai

If your not for Woman's freedom,

you have no right to live in this world.

Eternal romance.

There is eternal romance in these ancient Hindu belief's.

The chataka birds.....that quenches its thirst only from raindrops.

Rishyasringa.... The chaste boy sage whose very presence in a place afflicted by drought brought in wake pouring rains, owing to his purity.

Sanat kumar ...the wise mind born son of Brahma .An ancient eternal, youth.

Thingal mumaari peidhal [tamil].....raining thrice a month. Nine days of sunshine and one day of rain .

Theory of creativity.

I have a theory,

A man's creativity is, from the womb.

A woman's creativity, is her womb.

Rain?

Are you a harp strum by celestials?

Are you here at the invitation of trees and plants?

Do you shower ,condensed ,by the kindness of some soul?

Do you foam on your own to tame this fiery earth?

What is your brief?

What is my grief?

That you could be the tears ,

Of one, who was once here.

Concert.

Nature is a concert.

The sound of falling rain,

The sweet notes of a bird,

The gurgle of gentle waves,

The rustle of leaves,

Are her background music.

Compensations.

A drop of dew dazzled with the brilliance of a diamond !

The crushed ice's comforting lustre was that of peerless pearls!

The gentle waves sparkled with smooth silver rakes!

How lucky I was to witness all this splendour at that fraction of time!

The dew rolled down from the blade of grass dissolving the diamond.

The crushed ice melted to a puddle, philandering away the pearls.

The waves lost their silver as the sun drew them to himself as he rose higher.

I was at the right place at the right time!

The compensations of life.

Rain.

What is this mystique called rain?

Why is it so magical?

Sunrise and sun set and the air I breathe,

Are so vital to my being,

Yet not one moment do I stop in my tracks,

to give it a thought,

Feel grateful or thankful or absorb it in wonder at all!

These feelings are reserved for Rain.

Rain is enthralling like a tinkling glass curtain.

It is distracting ,

It is unpredictable,

Yet when it rains it douses all grouses.

It makes life standstill in streets as well as in forests.

Rain ,can you ever be taken for granted?

Bubbles.

The woods are lovely ,dark and deep ,
But I have promises to keep ,
And miles to go before I sleep......are the popular lines of a 19 th cent American poet that reveals his take on life.

1800 years earlier ,the Indian king ,an ascetic as well as a poet Bharathri hari has made the following observation, in classical Sanskrit on life in his treatise Vairagya sataka... .

Ayur varshantam nranam parimitam ratru

thadharram gatam|

Tasyar dasya parasya chardhamparam balatva

vridhatvyoh|

Sesham vyasdhi vi yogadhu; Khashinta sevaddhibir

niyate|

Jive ' varita ghyabudbudha saukyam kutah

praninam|

Meaning...

100 years is the life span of man,

Half of that passes in the stillness of night,

And of the half remaining , half is childhood and old age.

The remainder is spent in service , with sickness ,separation and sorrow as companions.

And where happiness in life is like bubbles blown on water!

Down south Thondaradipodi Aazhwaar a devotee of Lord Vishnu ,in 8 th cent AD has couched his view on life in the following attractive verse in Tamil

Vedanool pirayum nooru manisartham puguverilim

Padhium urangipogum,nintrathil padhi aandu

Pedhai palakan aagum pinni pasee moopum thunbam

Aadhalal piravi ve'ndhyen Aranga ma nagarullane'!

Meaning...

Though Vedas allot 100 years of life to human beings'

Half of this is spent in sleeping,

The remaining half is confiscated by the ignorance of childhood, poverty, hunger, disease ,old age and sorrow.

Therefore ,do not grant me any more births , this my plea to you,the resident of Srirangam[ vishnu]

Charmasloka.

Charma sloka is a mantra .When it is chanted with absolute faith ,it becomes the source of maintenance ,nourishment and enjoyment to 'Jiva'and also the cause of 'Moksha'.

This mantra focuses on 'Saranagathi'[surrender]as an easy' sadhan'a[way] to attain 'Moksha'[ freedom from karma and the state of ultimate bliss].

Saranagathi is an important feature of Visishtadwaita philosophy. Those who worship Vishnu along with his consort Lakshmi are known as Sri Vaishnavas. The origins of this form of worship is traced to Rigveda, Purana's, Epics, Agamas and the hymns of Aazhwars.

Sri Ramanuja ,who lived 12 th cent AD is the most important preceptor of Visishtadwaita philosophy.

Sri Ramanuja was an erudite Sanskrit scholar . He was seeped with Bhakthi[devotion] to god namely Vishnu . He is credited with having written Navarathna's or 9 gems that reveal his philosophical thoughts , his commentaries on Bhagwad Gita and Upanishads, heart stirring prayers on Ranganatha, glorious description of Sri Vaikuntam [ abode of Vishnu] and simple guidelines to devotees.

He was convinced that god was full of good attributes and was therefore worthy of worship. The corner stone of his teachings was the staunch belief in Bhakthi[ faith and devotion] and Prapathi[ surrender to Vishnu.

This simple way to ever lasting bliss and peace can be gleaned from Varahapurana, Ramayana and Gita. The three avatars of Vishnu ---Varaha, Rama and Krishna are associated in gifting mankind with this easy way to salvation.

Varaha is the third avatar of Vishnu . He assumes the form of a boar to rescue the world hidden away in deep waters by a powerful Asura. After prising the world away from the clutches of the asura , Sri Varahamoorty assures the beseeching Bhooma devi and mortals, that they need fear none , once they surrender to him .

The two slokas preached by Varahamoorthy are known asVakya dvaya. An very easy way of performing Saranagahti. They are...

Stithe manasi suswathe shariresathiyo nareh

Dhatu samye stithe smarta visva rupam cha mama ajam

Tatsam mriyamanam thu kastha pashana sannibham

Aham smarami madhbakhtan nayami param gatim

The man , who , when his mind is in normal condition , his body not shattered and elementary constituents of the body [ dhatus] are in perfect equipoise , meditates and surrenders to me [ Varaha] , who has the world as My body and Am not subject to births , as and when the man lies like a log of wood or a piece of stone in his dying moments , even if he doesn't remember me then,I will not forget or forgo this devotee of mine and lead to attain the supreme abode!

The 33 rd verse of the 18 th chapter of Yuddakanda of Ramayana and the 66th verse of the 18 th chapter of Gita enshrines the Saranagathi principle.Vishnu in his avatar as Rama and Krishna states this clearly.

In the Yuddakanda of Ramayana, Vibeeshna the pious brother of the rakashas king Ravana , implores his elder brother to free Sita and hand her over to Rama. Rama is on the verge of landing on Lanka to rescue his wife.

His plea falls on deaf ears and serves to incite Ravana to anger . He reprimands and castigates Vibheeshana so thoroughly that Vibeeshna leaves the kingdom angrily with the following words.

"O king who forever speak pleasing words are easy to find . But one speaks useful but unpleasant words , as also the one who listens to them are rare to find".

Vibeeshna decides to seek refuge inRama whom he perceives as a good man , upholder of Dharma .An avatar of Vishnu.

As he approaches Rama's camp Sugriva the chief of Rama's army has some misgivings. He thinks that Vibeeshna being the brother of the enemy must be a spy and thereby incapable of trust . However Hanuman differs and opines that a deceitful man would never approach straightforwardly and with such obvoius friendliness.

Rama heard the opinion of all and then spoke his mind thus...

Mitra bhaveena sampraatam na tyajeyam kathamcana

Dosa yadi api tasyayaat stam etad agarhitam |

By any means I donot desert any one who arrives with a friendly appearance

Even if if he has a defect

I will accept him irreproachably ,as would all good men !

Then Rama proceeds to narrate an incident from ancient scriptures

A dove received an hunter who had killed its wife , when he sought refuge under its tree , in accordance with the rules of hospitality , by inviting the enemy to feast on its flesh!

Rama then refers to sage Kandu's admonishments to kings.....

O kings , even an enemy , who forms a cup with his hollow hands , that miserable person , who is begging and seeking refuge shouldnot be turned away.

An enemy who is arrogant , but seeks protection from others ,must be protected .

If an refugee dies before the eyes of a man who is able to protect him , the former takes along all the latter's moral merits and goes.

Reputation, strength and valour is destroyed if one doesnot protect a person seeking refuge.

Then Rama gives the following assurance [ 33 verse 18 th chapter of yuddakanda]....

Sakrid eva prapannaaya tava asmi iti ca yaacate

Abhayam sarva bhuutebyo dadaami etad vratam mama|

He who seeks refuge in me just once , telling me that 'I am yours'

I shall give him safety against all types of beings

This is my solemn pledge!

According to Sri Ramanuja the 66 th verse of Bhagwadgita is the most noble verse ,out of all of the verses in that sacred text.

If an aspirant has no capacity to to perform sadhanas like Karma, Gyana ,or bhakthi yoga , he can perform this alternate and a very simple sadhana ---enshrined in the 'TheCharma sloka'.

The Charma sloka says....

Sarva dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja|

Aham tva sarva papebyo mokshayaishyami masuchaha||

Having given up all dharmas or rites unintentionally, surrender to me [ lordNarayana] alone ,

I will release you from all sins and grant Moksha.Do not despair or grieve!

Crow Vs parrot.

A clarion call to quit India was made from the ramparts of the ,capital city, recently.

I hail from a region that was rife with such calls till power was tasted at the centre. This enriched not only the coffers of those who stood in the forefront of such movements but also filtered down to benefit the masses.

When, even a vote of a single MP can determine the fate of the govt at the centre , often compared to the nail biting finishes of odi's, it makes sense to stick on .

Deserting the ship , would in all probability end in being neatly trapped by our neighbours. They may clothe and feed more efficiently than us.

But ,I 'd rather be a crow , fly around freely ,cawing raucously and foraging ravenously than be a petite parrot , listless and fettered for life!

Time.

Philosophers , poets , scholars and ordinary people have saluted 'Time ' down the ages

Bhartrihari an king of first century BC ,India ,renounced his kingdom after getting tired and sick of material and worldly pleasures and became a ascetic and spent several years till his end in deep meditation , on the banks of river Ganga ,at Haridwar. A bathing ghat built in his memory by his brother, the famous ruler Vikramaditya is still in existence!
'
Bhathrihari has condensed his thoughts in Sanskrit in 'Vairagya sataka' or the path to renunciation. He has saluted 'Time' in this work in the following manner.

Those beautiful cities,
Those mighty monarchs,

Those powerful nobles,

Those learned assemblies,

Those women with faces shining like the moon,

Those proud princes,

And those who sang their praises,

They have all been carried away by the torrid torrents
of Time !

Even their memories have been swept away!

My salutations therefore is to Time, who works all these!

He further says----

In a dwelling once there were many , now only one, where there was one , there were later many and then again one!In such a way day and night are dashed hither and thither by Kala[time] ,as if they were pieces of dice and play with men on chess board of this world,as if they were chess coins.

He chides----

Cease 'o' my mind wandering restlessly.

That which has been decreed by fate cannot be warded off. Think not of past or worry about the future, take delight only in those matters of present which come to thee and are gone without sought!
Marcus Aurelius was a Roman emperor of 2 nd century AD . He was a stoic philosopher, who gave vent to his thoughts, in Greek , in a treatise known as 'The Meditations.'

He says---

Hippocrates after curing many diseases ,himself fell sick and died. The Chaldaci---astrologers, foretold the deaths of many and then fate caught them to . Alexander , Pompeii and Cesar , after so often completely destroying whole cities and in battle cutting to piece's 10, ooo's of cavalry and infantry, themselves too at last departed from life.Heraclitus[astronomer]after so many speculations on conflagration of the universe , was filled with water internally and died smeared all over by mud. Philosophers like Socrates and so on , after endless discussions on death and immortality , themselves died!

How many tyrants who have used their power over men's lives with terrible insolence as if they were immortals , how many grand cities , are entirely dead and buried. One burying the other and he himself buried soon after!

How ephemeral human beings are . What was yesterday a little mucus , tomorrow will be mummy or ashes!

Look at the immensity of time behind you and the time which is before you .

The past is over, it is no more yours. The future is also not yours. It is only the present that is yours. Death takes only your present . The present , that, short period of time is same for all . So what is the difference between him who lives 3 days or 3 generations?

Pass then through this little space of time conformably with nature, giving yourself willingly to fate and end the journey in content.

Edge of the sword.

The wise poet Sri Bhartrihari says

There is one god either Vishnu or Siva .

There is one friend either a king or a ascetic.

There is one dwelling either in town or in the country.

There is one spouse handsome or ugly!

He asks and answers

1.What is the greatest loss?

Failure to perform one's duty.

2.What is wealth?

Knowledge.

3. Where is peace found?

In truth and righteousness.

4.What is the greatest advantage?

The society of the good.

5.What is the greatest disadvantage?

The society of the wicked.

He praises action in the following manner:

Actions carried in much haste are like arrows piercing the heart. When the wise begin their action
they look carefully to the end of them ,so that they may be free from successive births.

If the sun is tired of his journey why does'nt he stand still?A good man keeps his words and is ever active taking the celestial's constant work as a example.

Finally I will wind up the Neethi satakas or wise sayings with Bhartrihari's following observation on the character of the good.

Private generosity, ungrudging hospitality to strangers, abstinence from speaking in public about one's good deeds, openly proclaiming the benefits received from others, humility in prosperity and respect for one's fellow beings are the sacred doctrines taught by the good , though adherence to it may be difficult as the attempt to stand on edge of the sword!

Edge of the sword...........

Bharthrihari's views , ' liberality' in the following manner:

The sun opens up the lotuses. The moon brightens the beds of water lilies. The clouds pour rain unasked !

In like manner people who are naturally liberal are continuously occupied in bestowing benefits on fellow creatures!

Ornaments:

The most precious ornament a man may posses is the courtesy of a nobleman, gentle speech of a hero and the calmness of knowledgeable scholars !

The most precious ornament of the wealthy is ,to the act of giving it to worthy people!

The most precious ornament of the ascetic is the abstinence from wrath!

The most precious ornament of Prince's is mercy

And of judges -freedom from corruption!

Edge of the sword -----

Bharthrihari the ancient grammarian and poet has made the following observations regarding
'Behaviour'.

The laws relating to behaviour are difficult to learn and can hardly be mastered even by an ascetic!

The man who wishes to be respectfully silent is looked upon as dumb!

The man who talks agreeably as too forward!

if a man stands near at hand ,he may be regarded as troublesome!

And if stands ,far off , people will call him cold hearted!

The patient man may be branded as timid!

And the impetuous man as ill bred!

wise?

How wise and sagacious the tortoise and the chameleon looks.Their drowsy and heavy lidded eyes are limpid pools of wisdom.

But the chameleon often changes its colours and the tortoise often withdraws into its shell

Messengers.

The scalding heat of summer months have given way to milder temperatures. With intermittent drizzles every other day , the Ac's have been switched off ,as the entire city of Chennai ,is air cooled from above.

An weather to rival that of any higher reaches. But forces are at work ,non stop to prevent me from enjoying this unbelievable weather.

If I sit in the balcony with a newspaper or a mag or a book to enjoy and relax in a little open space, can I ? No! From their hiding places the eternal pests, those tiny creatures so easy to squash ,find the most unreachable places [back] to draw their daily rations and go at it in glee, making me squirm , twist and turn in impossible yogic postures , that would do my guru Dhirendra Bramhachari [late] proud!

After some hard walking ,when I drop down on those glazed tiled benches in the park ,that are so inviting, to regain my breath, a huge school of piranha's , those little beasts , hiding in the grass ,start picking my feet and ankles in a orgy of feasting, making me execute dancing steps , I have long since forgotten.

Once twilight falls no place in the house is free from these devils . With their acute night vision and carnivorous appetite and hunting skills honed to perfection , they keep me on my toes. My hands clap thunderously , hurting only myself, my aim thwarted by their easy evasion , a survival technique handed down by their ancestors from generations to generations as old as mine!

I can't read nor can I see TV nor sleep in peace . The fogging operations, a deterrent of sort, undertaken assiduously a few years back by the corporation have become virtually non existent.

Yamadhuthars need not bestir themselves to transport me to the nether worlds . These tiny man eaters , manning every nook and corner ,will do it swiftly and with great elan!

A handful of grass!

With regard to riches Bharthrihari has the following to say...

Giving, spending and losing are the three ways by which the amount of one's wealth is lessened . And the man who neither gives nor spends ,may yet be ruined by the third way!

A part of jewel is cut away by stone when polished . Yet it sparkles, .Similarily noble men who have depleted their wealth by bestowing it on the needy ,still remain illustrious!

A change in fortune of men makes things seem greater or smaller like a starving man longing for a handful of rice on being satiated regards the whole world as a handful of grass!

Destiny has prescribed for every man his portion. The pitcher holds same quantity of water whether filled in a well or from depths of a ocean.Do not become miserable by envying the rich .

I am reminded of a interview of a very rich man by weekly magazine .On being enquired with obvious curiosity and envy as how it felt to be literally rolling on money ,pat came the reply, dousing, like a bucket of cold water.''My bank account may be overflowing and I do own palatial bungalows, but I can eat only four idli's in the morning, like you or anybody else!''

Survival.

One can survive even if one is lost in the vast ocean.

One can survive even if one is lost in hot as well as cold deserts.

One can survive even if one is lost in the ridges of icy peaks.

Can one survive if lost in the infinite space?

Edge of the sword ....

Brithrahari has the following praise for 'firmness'.

The dog falls prostrate at the feet of anyone who gives him food, wagging its tail and opening wide his mouth. But the elephant remains unmoved in such circumstances and will not eat until coaxed with flattering words!

The dog finds the dirty little fleshless bone of some ox ,and over this he will rejoice . Even though it maynot satisfy his hunger. But the lion scornfully passes by the jackal and rushes upon the elephant .
The lion may be overpowered by hunger, and his strong frame weakened by old age, he may lie in a state of misery and at the point of death, his majestic appearance may have departed from him and his life slowly ebbing away ,yet his one desire is to swallow at a mouthful ,the brow of the noble elephant .How could he the mightiest of all living beings feed merely on withered grass?

In like manner ,the man of firm mind , no matter what condition of distress he may be in ,seeks that which is most accordance with his natural disposition .

Tuesday, August 31, 2010

Edge of a sword....contd.

Brathrihari has this to say about the 'Power of fate'.

Success or failure of men lies in the hands of fate alone.

When the branches of a tree is cut , its shoots grow again. The moon wanes and waxes. Thus wise men reflect and are not overwhelmed by distress.

A bald headed man was scorched by fierce rays of the sun. Fate guided him to the shade of a palm tree . Whilst resting , the fruit of the tree fell on his head with a loud crash and broke it.Wherever the unfortunate man goes he meets disaster!

It is not sun's fault that the owl cannot see at day.
Who can interfere with what fate has written on the forehead of us all ?

Monday, August 23, 2010

Edge of a sword .

Bhartrihari says the following "In praise of wisdom" -

O Mighty rulers -cast away your pride in presence of those who are rich in the inward treasury of wisdom . They can't be robbed by thieves, but their treasure , which is continually increasing becomes even larger when they share it with the needy, and it will not perish at the end of the world . Who can compare with the wise?

If a man has anger in his heart ,what other enemy need he fear?If he lives amongst ill disposed people ,why should he fear the serpent? If a man has patience why should he need a armour? If he possess perfect wisdom why should he strive for wealth? If he is modest why does he require ornaments?

Bracelets do not set off a persons appearance nor strings of pearls as pure and clear as the moon , not yet bathing , perfumes, flowers and carefully dressed hair!Nothing adorns a person more than perfect wisdom. Jewels may perish but wisdom the most beautiful ornament lasts for ever .

Social intercourse with wise takes away dullness of mind .Exalts the intellect .Makes our words, more truthful. Wisdom is like a friend to the man who travels to distant countries!

Love righteousness. Avoid evil even at pain of death. Have no contact with the wicked . Do not lose your dignity even in adversity.Do not covet another's riches and wife.Nor take any one's life. A poor man, howsoever close shouldn't be asked alms.Adhere to doctrines of good and great. Even though the attempt to do all this is as difficult as trying to stand on the edge of a sword!

On reading books.

Rene Descartes ---French philosopher says

"The reading of all good bocks is like a conversation with the finest men of past centuries."

Charles Richardson says-----

"Books are never troublesome, but immediately answer every question I ask them .Some relate to me the events of the past ages, while others reveal to me the secrets of nature . Some teach me how to live , others how to die. Some by their vivacity drive away my cares and exhilarate my spirits, while others give fortitude to my mind and teach me the important lesson how to restrain my desires and depend wholly on myself."

Right reading of books gives culture ,to mind."Culture is the contact with the best that has been said and thought in the world "---- Mathew Arnold.

Edge of a sword.

Bharthrihari was a great grammarian of ancient India. He is also famous for composing poems in classical Sanskrit. One of his compositions the 'Nithi Sataka' deals with ethics. They contain brilliant poems in miniature ,that are entertaining , observant .wry and often deeply reflective. They were written roughly 1500 to 2000 years back !

Some of his poems are as follows :

A man may tear the pearl away from the teeth of a crocodile. He may steer his ship over roughest seas. He may twine a serpent around his brow like a laurel, but he cannot convince a foolish and stubborn opponent!

A man may squeeze oil from sand. He may slake his thirst from the well in a mirage . He may even obtain possession of a hare's horn ,but he cannot change the opinion of a stubborn and foolish man !

God has given a cloak, whereby he can conceal his ignorance . He can wrap it any moment for it always lies at hand. The cloak of silence . An ornament peculiarly fitted for an ignorant man in the company of wise.

The man who cannot appreciate music and literature is exactly like lower animals even though he may not possess horns and a tail.Though he may not eat grass , he yet lives a life precisely like that of kine.

A person who does not study, do penance and charity and has no virtues like patience , pity and courage is nothing but an animal in human form

It is better to roam among mountains with the wild beasts than to live in a palace with fools!

to be contd.....

I am convinced.

We acquire degrees by mugging up reams upon reams of unintelligible pages and consider ourselves to be highly educated and turn our noses at illiterate people and those who are less educated than us and close our minds to their opinions .

Adi Shankara had memorised and digested all the 4 Vedas and every other scripture that Bharat was abounding with, by 16 years of age and had won every single debate with brilliant scholars in Sanskrit and the various schools of philosophy in Hinduism as well as in other religions ,all over India.
He has written innumerable treatises ,poetries, commentaries ,slokas and lyrics ,that were analytical as well as poetic , in chaste Sanskrit .He let his accomplishments rest lightly on his person and could cull the diamond of knowledge and let it sparkle irrespective of its source.

Maniisha Panchangam is a set of 5 verses composed by Shankara .'Maniisha' means 'conviction'. These verses, bring out in short, the philosophy in which he believed and expounded. This was written in Varanasi in the 8 th century A.D .The story behind these verses are legendary.

Shankara was on his way to a temple after bathing , On seeing a chandela [out caste] on his way ,he gestured to him to keep his distance as per customs of those days.

The out caste asked two questions which were poignant as well as of highest knowledge that made Shankara to pause and ponder and evoked a reply in the same vein, in 5 verses.

The questions posed by the chandela were ---
'
O great ascetic ! tell me .Do you want to keep a distance from you , by uttering 'Go away' 'Go away ', taking me to be a out caste ? Is it addressed from one body made of food to another body made of food or is it from one consciousness to another consciousness --who , O , the best among ascetics , you wish should go away?Do tell me.

Then the 2nd question ---

The sun's light falls on the waters of the Ganges as well as on drains .The sun's image is reflected from both the surfaces . Is there any difference between the two images ?Similarly is there any difference in the images of sun reflected in water contained in a vessel whether the latter is made of gold or mud?

These questions evoked the following reply, from Adi Shankara who saw the personification of lord Shankara in the out caste.

If one is convinced firmly , that he is that very soul which manifests itself in all conditions of sleep ,wakefulness and dream ,in all objects of the great Brahma[ the creator]
to the tiny ant and which is also vibrant ,but invisible , witness of all ,he is the great teacher /preceptor , be he twice born or an out caste. This is my firm conviction!

He is the great master ,be he a brahmin or an out caste ,who dwelling on the pure and the infinite Brahman, thinks himself as that very Brahman , of whose manifestation the whole universe is , though apparently the universe is assumed to consist of different things due to ignorance and the 3 gunas viz rajas ,thamas and satvic. This is my firm conviction !

The preceptors words that the entire world is perishable is true. A person who constantly meditates on the Brahman with a pure and calm mind will burn his past and future karma's ,in the fire of knowledge . This is my firm conviction !

As sun's halo is covered by clouds , the effulgence of god is hidden by ignorance . The yogi is great who grasps this truth within himself He is my guru . This is my firm conviction !

He who worships Brahman and is at peace with himself , is himself that Brahman . This is my firm conviction !

Shankara then concludes ---
O lord ! In the form of body I am your servant . In the form of life O, three eyed one I am part of your self .In the form of soul you are within me and in every other soul !
